TV ratings smile on Oscar as viewership rises

An estimated 41.3 million people saw "The Hurt Locker" top the popular "Avatar" for best picture in the most-watched Academy Awards telecast since 2005.

Oscar viewership was up 14 percent over last year, the Nielsen Co. said Monday, keeping with a trend of bigger audiences for major events on broadcast television a month after the Super Bowl set the mark for most-watched telecast ever.

In true film fashion, the Oscars built to a big climax when the Iraqi war thriller "The Hurt L

Stevie Wonder receives top French award

US singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder was Saturday awarded one of France's top cultural honours, which he dedicated to his deceased mother 30 years after he was tapped to receive it.

"I receive this honour in memory of my mother and in memory of all of those that have made it possible for me to stand here today," said an emotional Wonder, clad in marine blue striped suit, as he received the Commander of Arts and Letters award from French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand.

Christopher Walken leads brilliant cast on Broadway

Onscreen, Christopher Walken's oft-imitated shtick has veered into self-parody in recent years.

But seeing it live is a whole other matter: On the evidence of his brilliant performance in Martin McDonagh's new play, "A Behanding in Spokane," the actor should have returned to the stage a long time ago.

Fueling the evening with his endlessly entertaining physical mannerisms, offbeat comic timing and hilarious vocal inflections, Walken lifts this slight shaggy-dog story into the co

Book optioned by 'Avatar' director is halted

Publication has been halted for a disputed book about the atomic bombing of Japan that "Avatar" director James Cameron had optioned for a possible film, The Associated Press has learned.

Publisher Henry Holt and Company, responding to questions from the AP, said Monday that author Charles Pellegrino "was not able to answer" concerns about "The Last Train from Hiroshima," including whether two men mentioned in the book actually existed.

'Octomom': Can't rule out another kid in future

Octuplets mother Nadya Suleman says she doesn't plan on having more children unless she gets married someday "far" in the future. She says if that ever happens, she would only have one child.

Widely known as "Octomom," Suleman has six older children. She appeared Wednesday on ABC's daytime talk show "The View," where she has been a frequent topic of debate.

Suleman's octuplets celebrated their first birthday in January.

All of her children were conceived by in vitro ferti

Publicist Stan Rosenfield announced Tuesday that Sheen has entered a rehab facility "as a preventative measure." He asked for privacy for Sheen, 44, but did not specify why the embattled actor was seeking treatment.

France buys memoirs of great lover Casanova

France's national library has bought the memoirs of celebrated Venetian lover Giacomo Casanova, which were initially thought to have perished at the end of World War Two.

The 3,700 fading yellow pages of Casanova's "Histoire de ma Vie" (Story of my Life) were discovered packed in a dozen boxes which had been transferred to a safe just days before the allied bombing of Germany in 1945.

"During the Second World War Leipzig was bombed, but the boxes were discovered in the basement

You betcha: Fey's 'SNL' return as Palin is likely

Tina Fey will probably reprise her famous impression of Sarah Palin when she hosts "Saturday Night Live" in April, the comedian told The Associated Press.

"It's inevitable that we'll try it, at least," Fey said in an interview Tuesday. "We'll see if it makes it to air."

Officials at the NBC sketch show wouldn't comment; "SNL" generally doesn't discuss any planned sketches, given that much can change even in the hours before show time.

Fey's performances as the former Alas

Time is my Master!

At forty-nine I have finally come to realize that time is my master. At this age you start to reflect on things you have done, and things you have not done. At this age you start to realize things that you can still get done, and things you will never get done, because time is your master.

Fall Colours

"The transition from summer to winter we call autumn is upon us. The fall colours is a reminder of Mother Nature’s beauty and a time to reap from her benefits. From full life into death within our seasons, fall is a small sign of the cycles found in our entire Universe. Until we are reborn again, in the spring, to complete yet another succession of life."
